Firefighters Helping Firefighters
May 31st, 2013 was the most devastating and deadly fire in Houston Fire Department history. A 5-alarm motel fire claimed the lives of four Houston firefighters and injured 14 others. Three of the injured firefighters have serious long-term injuries. Anthony Livesay and Robert Yarbrough have months of recovery at home and expected surgeries ahead. The third, Captain William Dowling, suffered crushing injuries and burns that required both legs to be amputated. He faces ongoing surgeries and dialysis to aid his body in healing. He remains in critical condition and fights for his life daily and will have many obstacles on his way to full recovery.
A group of firefighters decided to establish a non-profit organization called “Firefighters Helping Firefighters” whose goal is to financially assist injured firefighters and their families who are burdened with these issues and obstacles. This may include medical expenses, services needed while hospitalized (food, hotel, home maintenance), retrofitting of home for handicap accessibility, in-home care, living expenses, etc.
